WASHINGTON, D.C.-President Trump has announced the United States will once again withdraw from the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). The State Department confirmed the decision on July 22, with spokesperson Tammy Bruce stating that UNESCO, “like many UN organizations, strayed from its founding mission.”

Bruce elaborated on the reasoning via a post on X, emphasizing that future U.S. participation in international organizations must prioritize American safety, strength, and prosperity. This move follows an executive order signed by President Trump in February, which initiated a review of U.S. involvement in UNESCO and also led to withdrawals from the United Nations Human Rights Council and UNRWA, the UN agency for Palestinian refugees.

White House spokesperson Anna Kelly echoed these sentiments on X, asserting that UNESCO, despite its mission of fostering understanding through culture and history, “supports woke, divisive cultural and social causes.” Kelly affirmed, “The President will always put America First,” and stressed that U.S. membership in all international organizations must align with national interests.

The U.S. previously withdrew from UNESCO in 2019 during the first Trump administration, a move also undertaken by Israel, which criticized the agency for allegedly “erasing” Jewish history within its borders. The United States had rejoined the organization in 2023 under former President Biden.
