Expect Accountability, Says Jaishankar On Attack On San Francisco Consulate
WASHINGTON, DC (ANI)- External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar has termed the 2023 attack on the Indian Consulate in San Francisco a “very serious matter,” emphasizing India’s expectation for accountability. Speaking at a press conference here, on January 22, Jaishankar said, “The arson attack on our consulate in San Francisco is very, very serious, and we expect accountability. We would like to see those responsible held accountable.”
The Consulate General of India in San Francisco was attacked on March 19, 2023, when assailants committed criminal trespass, damaged property, and confronted consulate officials. Earlier the same day, attackers attempted to set the building on fire by using inflammable substances. A video later surfaced showing suspected pro-Khalistani protestors gathering outside the consulate, shouting slogans, and heckling staff.
Three months later, in July, Khalistan extremists again attempted to set the consulate on fire. The incidents drew strong condemnation from the U.S., which labeled them as criminal offenses. Local police, diplomatic security personnel, and federal authorities were notified, and investigations were launched.
At the same press conference, Jaishankar briefly mentioned his discussion with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Bangladesh but declined to provide further details, stating it was not appropriate to elaborate.
