LOS ANGELES, CA – Fawzia Mirza, known for her work on Hulu’s Deli Boys, has been tapped to direct Hana Khan Carries On, an upcoming feature from Amazon MGM Studios and Kaling International. The film is based on Uzma Jalaluddin’s 2021 novel and is currently in development.

The screenplay is written by Sahar Jahani, whose credits include RamyThe Bold Type, and 13 Reasons Why. Jahani also adapted Jalaluddin’s earlier novel Ayesha at Last for Amy Pascal and Columbia Pictures and is currently working on her debut novel. She received a Peabody Award for her work on the Emmy-nominated Ramy.

Set in Chicago, the story follows chef and family restaurant owner Hana, who unknowingly falls for a rival on an anonymous dating app — a man whose family’s food empire could jeopardize her business.

Mirza’s recent directorial feature The Queen of My Dreams premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival and earned her the Directors Guild of Canada’s top honor for feature film directing. The film garnered five Canadian Screen Award nominations and was released in U.S. theaters on Friday, June 20, 2025. Mirza was also recognized by the Obama administration in 2016 as a White House Champion of Change in Asian American Storytelling.

The film is produced by Mindy Kaling and Jessica Kumai Scott through Kaling International. Kaling, who also co-created Never Have I EverThe Sex Lives of College Girls, and Netflix’s Running Point, continues to expand her producing slate with projects spotlighting South Asian voices.

Mirza is represented by IAG, Alexander Stegmaier, and Granderson Des Rochers. Jahani is repped by IAG, Tantrum, and Morris Yorn. Kaling is represented by CAA, 3Arts, and Ziffen Law.
