Folk Singer Sharda Sinha Was Bihar’s Cultural Ambassador
NEW DELHI (ANI) – Renowned folk singer Sharda Sinha, affectionately known as the ‘Bihar Kokila,’ passed away on November 5 at the age of 72 after battling cancer. A prominent figure since the 1970s, Sinha made invaluable contributions to Bhojpuri, Maithili, and Hindi folk music, earning widespread admiration for her soulful renditions.
Sinha is celebrated as a cultural ambassador of Bihar, especially for her iconic Chhath geet that has become synonymous with the Chhath festival, widely celebrated in Bihar and across North India.
Her career, which began in the 1970s, brought her national recognition as a pioneering voice in regional music.
Her notable song “Babool” from Hum Aapke Hain Koun…! gained her both fame and critical acclaim.
In 2018, Sinha was awarded the prestigious Padma Bhushan, India’s third-highest civilian honor, in recognition of her contributions to the arts. She also received a National Film Award, solidifying her legacy as a leading voice in Indian folk music.
