EDISON, NJ – Amitoj Oberoi, a 31-year-old former Edison Township police officer, was sentenced to 15 years in state prison for a high-speed, drunken driving crash that claimed the lives of two passengers. The crash occurred in August 2023.

The Somerset County Superior Court judge handed down the sentence which includes two concurrent 15-year terms for first-degree vehicular homicide. Oberoi must serve 85% of his sentence before becoming eligible for parole.

Oberoi was driving a Audi Q7 when the vehicle, traveling at high speed, veered off the road, striking trees, lamp posts, and a utility pole before coming to a stop. Oberoi, who had a blood alcohol level over the legal limit at the time of the crash, was taken to a trauma center for treatment of his injuries. He was later suspended from the Edison Police Department, pending the outcome of the case. Oberoi pleaded guilty to the charges on June 18, 2024.

Perez-Gaytan, who was seated on the right side of the rear seat, was ejected from the car and pronounced dead at the scene. Cabrera-Francisco, seated on the left side of the rear seat, was trapped in the vehicle and also died at the scene. A third passenger, a 29-year-old man from Highland Park, sustained minor injuries but refused medical treatment.

In addition to the vehicular homicide charges, Oberoi was also sentenced for driving while intoxicated.
