Ghazala Hashmi Builds Lead In VA Lt. Governor Race, Poll Shows

RICHMOND, VA — Democratic State Senator Ghazala Hashmi holds a 10-point lead over Republican challenger John Reid in the race for Virginia’s lieutenant governor, according to a new Commonwealth Poll released by Virginia Commonwealth University’s Wilder School.

The survey, conducted between June 19 and July 3, found Hashmi backed by 46% of registered voters, while Reid, a former conservative radio host, trails at 36%. The poll’s margin of error is 4.16 percentage points, placing Hashmi’s lead outside the statistical margin and signaling growing strength for Democrats.

Hashmi, the first Muslim woman elected to the Virginia Senate, has emphasized reproductive rights, healthcare access, and public education—issues that continue to resonate with voters.

The poll suggests that the broader political environment is also benefiting her candidacy, as Republican figures like Governor Glenn Youngkin and former President Donald Trump see declining support among Independents and suburban voters.
