Hansal Mehta’s ‘Gandhi’ Becomes First Indian Series Selected for TIFF
TORONTO – Hansal Mehta’s upcoming historical drama ‘Gandhi’ will have its world premiere at the 50th Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) in 2025.
Sharing the news on social media, Mehta wrote:
‘An audacious dream, born of belief and perseverance, now steps onto the world stage. ‘Gandhi’ will have its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival 2025 as part of its carefully curated PrimeTime slate.’
In a proud milestone, ‘Gandhi’ is the first Indian series ever to be selected for TIFF.
‘The first Indian series ever to be featured at TIFF. In its 50th year, this festival becomes the home for a story that is at once deeply personal and profoundly universal. A moment of pride. A moment of memory. A quiet revolution begins,’ Mehta added.
Produced under the Applause Entertainment banner, ‘Gandhi’ is a cinematic adaptation of Ramachandra Guha’s books ‘Gandhi Before India’ and ‘Gandhi: The Years That Changed the World’.
The much-anticipated series is expected to explore pivotal moments in Mahatma Gandhi’s life — from his early activism in South Africa to his leadership in India’s struggle for independence.
Planned as a three-season series, filming for the first season concluded in August 2024, with a release expected in 2025.
Pratik Gandhi plays the lead role of Mahatma Gandhi, with Bhamini Oza as Kasturba Gandhi, Tom Felton as Josiah Oldfield, and Jaival Pathak as young Harilal Gandhi. The ensemble cast also includes Amar Upadhyay, Libby Mai, Harry Mckeown, R Badree, Molly Wright, Ralph Adeniyi, James Murray, Lindon Alexander, Ramdas (Priyansh Bajaj), Jonno Davies, and Simon Lennon.
The series will feature music composed by A. R. Rahman. (IANS)
