WASHINGTON, DC – The White House announced on May 23 that President Joe Biden will be appointing 12 additional members to the White House Environmental Justice Advisory Council, a federal advisory committee he established to tackle the climate crisis.
Among the appointees is Indian American Harleen Marwah, a Pediatric Resident Physician at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. She is the Founding Chair of Medical Students for a Sustainable Future, a community of medical students working to prevent and address the health harms of climate change.
Marwah has noted that climate change inspired her to become a doctor, and her career so far reflects her passion in this area. She earned Health Care Without Harm’s 2020 Emerging Physician Leader Award, which recognizes medical students and professionals who have shown a passion for sustainable healthcare practices and a commitment to climate action. According to a press release, Marwah brings “experience in youth engagement and working at the intersection of healthcare and climate change to the Council.”
Marwah holds undergraduate and master’s degrees from the University of Southern California and a medical degree from the George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences.
The Council provides advice and recommendations to the White House Environmental Justice Interagency Council and the Chair of the White House Council on Environmental Quality on how to address current and historic environmental injustices.
