Harris Interview: More Centrist, Defends Biden, Dismisses Trump’s Racist Remarks

SAVANNAH, GA (REUTERS) – Kamala Harris, in her first major interview since becoming the Democratic presidential nominee, outlined a tougher approach to migration and stressed the need for enforcing U.S. border laws. Accompanied by vice presidential nominee Tim Walz, she was speaking to CNN’s Dana Bash on August 29, Harris emphasized that “we have laws that have to be followed and enforced” and stated that illegal border crossings should have consequences. She also vowed to renew efforts for comprehensive border legislation.

Harris expressed a desire to include a Republican in her cabinet if elected, saying, “I think it’s important to have people at the table when some of the most important decisions are being made that have different views, different experiences.” This move underscores her emphasis on diverse perspectives in governance.

When asked about former President Donald Trump’s remarks questioning her identity as a Black American, Harris dismissed them as the “same old tired playbook” and quickly moved on, stating, “Next question, please.”

Defending her and President Biden’s handling of inflation, Harris pointed to the challenges they inherited, saying, “We took over an economy ravaged by the pandemic and mismanagement.” She acknowledged that “prices are still too high,” but emphasized that progress has been made.

On the Israel-Gaza conflict, Harris reiterated her strong support for Israel, in line with President Biden’s policies, despite calls from within her party to reconsider U.S. military aid due to the high Palestinian death toll. She emphasized, “We must get a deal done” to achieve a ceasefire, but affirmed that the U.S. should continue supporting Israel’s defense.

Addressing her stance on key issues, Harris has shifted toward a more centrist position since her 2020 presidential run. She no longer supports a ban on fracking, a significant issue in swing states like Pennsylvania, and has toughened her position on border security. When asked about these shifts, she asserted, “My values have not changed.”

Jeremi Suri, history and public affairs professor at the University of Texas at Austin, said Harris came across as knowledgeable and a “consensus builder” in the interview but she could have had “more concrete and specific answers” on what she would do on her first day as president.
