House Dems Criticize Trump For Targeting India With Tariffs
WASHINGTON, D.C. – The House Foreign Affairs Committee Democrats have criticized U.S. President Donald Trump for imposing a 50% tariff on imports from India over its purchase of Russian oil. The committee’s allegations, shared in a post on X, state that this decision is “hurting Americans & sabotaging the US-India relationship in the process” while sparing larger buyers like China.
The new tariffs came into effect on August 27, following a notice from U.S. Customs and Border Protection. This action gives effect to President Trump’s Executive Order 14329, which is aimed at addressing threats from Russia.
According to a media report cited by the committee, the decision to focus solely on India is a confusing policy outcome, particularly because China, the largest importer of Russian energy, has not faced similar punishment. The committee questioned the administration’s motive, remarking, “It’s almost like it’s not about Ukraine at all.”
The U.S. Customs and Border Protection stated that the new duties were implemented to modify the Harmonized Tariff Schedule of the United States in line with the executive order. The new tariffs apply to all Indian products for consumption in the U.S. or withdrawn from warehouses. (ANI)
