CHALFONT, PA – More than 500 members of the Indian diaspora gathered at the Bharatiya Temple here to celebrate the 19th annual Gangaur Festival.

Organized by the Philadelphia Rajasthani Mandal, the event drew a significant turnout from the Rajasthani community across the northeastern United States for a day of traditional rituals dedicated to Gauri Mata. The festivities included a ceremonial procession, cultural presentations, and a spread of regional cuisine such as dal baati churma and gatte ki sabzi.

The celebration was attended by several dignitaries, including Consul General of India in New York Binay Srikanta Pradhan, who served as the chief guest. U.S. Congressman Brian Fitzpatrick and the Mayor of Ambler were also in attendance.

During his address, Consul General Pradhan emphasized the growing importance of the India-U.S. relationship, noting a shift toward high-tech collaboration in sectors like artificial intelligence and trade. He urged the diaspora to remain coordinated in addressing shared community concerns while contributing to the bilateral ties between the two nations.

A central theme of the event was the ongoing advocacy for the Rajasthani language. Guest of Honor Prem Bhandari, president of the Rajasthan Association of North America, renewed calls for the language to be included in the Eighth Schedule of the Indian Constitution. He expressed frustration over the lack of progress since a 2003 resolution by the Rajasthan Legislative Assembly and noted that all political parties share responsibility for the delay.

This sentiment was echoed in a poster competition for children, where young participants highlighted Rajasthan’s heritage.

The gathering also served as a platform to recognize local philanthropy and address community welfare. The event highlighted a $1 million donation from Bharatiya Temple founder Nand Todi toward a new supportive housing project in Montgomery County.

Known as Todi’s Place of Hope, the recently opened facility in Lansdale provides transitional shelter and wraparound services for those experiencing homelessness.

Alongside the festival, Pradhan and Bhandari held a meeting with representatives from over 25 community organizations to discuss legal and social issues affecting the Indian American population in the region.
