ICC Blames Technical Glitch For Missing Virat, Rohit In ODI Ranking
India-West News Desk
NEW DELHI- An embarrassing technical error by the International Cricket Council (ICC) caused the names of Indian cricket icons Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma to be temporarily removed from the latest One Day International (ODI) rankings.
The oversight led to a flurry of social media speculation about the players’ potential retirement from the ODI format, the only format in which they remain active after stepping away from Tests and T20Is. The ICC has since corrected the mistake, stating to the cricket publication Wisden that a number of issues were being investigated.
Following the fix, Rohit Sharma was re-listed at No. 2 and Virat Kohli at No. 4.
The corrected rankings also revealed a significant shake-up in the bowling and batting lists. In the ODI bowler rankings, South African spinner Keshav Maharaj has reclaimed the top spot. He displaced India’s Kuldeep Yadav, who now sits at third place. Aside from Kuldeep, Ravindra Jadeja is the only other Indian bowler in the top 10.
In the men’s batting rankings, India’s Shubman Gill holds onto the No. 1 position with 784 points. Shreyas Iyer is the only other Indian batsman in the top 10, ranked eighth.
It’s worth noting that the Indian team has not played an ODI since their victory in the Champions Trophy.
