In Bengal Stand Off, Defiant Mamata: Let Them Dismiss Me
India-West News Desk
KOLKATA – West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee has refused to step down following her party’s electoral defeat, maintaining that she will not resign despite criticism from opposition leaders.
“Let them dismiss me. I want this to be a black day,” Banerjee told party MLAs during a meeting on May 5.
The Trinamool Congress leader also declared that the day the state assembly opens would be observed as a “black dress day” by party legislators.
Banerjee accused the Election Commission of playing “nasty games” and pointed to defeats suffered by non-BJP alliances in Maharashtra, Haryana, and Bihar in recent elections.
At the meeting, she also announced the formation of a disciplinary committee against party leaders who speak publicly against the Trinamool Congress. Banerjee’s refusal to resign has triggered debate over the next steps, with political leaders and legal observers discussing the Governor’s powers in such a situation.
A chief minister holds office at the Governor’s pleasure and remains in position until the legislative assembly is dissolved. The current West Bengal Assembly’s term ends on May 7.

Mamata is a drama queen. Always was on her way up. Why should it be any different on her way down?

It is bad politics, bad optics, and very poor judgement. Reflects very poorly to her leadership, poorly on TMC as a political entity and surely seals her fate on any future elections. Since she is nationally known for good or worse, her actions have repercussions for the INDIA alliance, her own party’s aspirations on a national level, and remember there are still 40 or odd reps in parliament as well. Guess might be Rahul might implore Kerala to allot Mamta begum a seat to contest in Kerala, next to his constituency. Then that again will diminish her stature and by that token Rahul might look better on the “India” alliance whatever is left of that. Surprisingly, WB is traditionally a “language” based state deeply in love with Bengali and that Bengalis saw through the corruption, extortion racket. Didi was running WB like some totalitarian regime where the “great leader” “leads” forever followed by their sons/daughters.

More one reads about her rain for last 15 years, makes you wonder how the Central government let her carry on all gundagiri, killings, suppressing anyone who said anything against her.
She allowed illegals from Bangladesh to settle permanently with voting rights. And that gangs carried out her orders to silent any opposition to her.
Her nephew, heir apparent, became a biggest gunda and a billionaire.
And since her loss her gundas have killed quite a few winning administrators.
Hope justice will prevail and people are kept safe and protected.
