NEW DELHI – India’s Defense Acquisition Council has approved the purchase of arms and equipment worth over $6.26 billion to strengthen the armed forces, the defense Ministry announced on March 20.

The council also approved new guidelines aimed at making the arms acquisition process “faster, more effective, and efficient,” a statement said.

The approval includes acquiring more powerful engines for Russian-origin T-90 battle tanks used by the Indian Army, additional anti-submarine torpedoes for the Indian Navy, and airborne early warning and control aircraft systems for the Indian Air Force.
