KANANASKIS – Prime Minister Narendra Modi concluded a productive visit to Canada on June 17, where he participated in the G7 Summit and held several high-level bilateral meetings, including a significant discussion with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney that saw both nations agree to resume full diplomatic relations.

The agreement between India and Canada marks a significant thaw in relations, which had been triggered by Canadian allegations in 2023 of Indian agents’ involvement in the killing of NIA-designated terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar outside a gurdwara in Canada.

At the G7 Leaders’ Summit in Kananaskis, Alberta, Carney and Modi held talks and concurred on designating new high commissioners, aiming to restore regular services to citizens and businesses in both countries, according to a press release from the Prime Minister of Canada.

Both leaders reaffirmed the importance of Canada-India ties, underscoring mutual respect, the rule of law, and a commitment to sovereignty and territorial integrity. Their discussions covered the strong historical ties between their peoples, partnerships in the Indo-Pacific, and significant commercial links.

Carney also highlighted G7 agenda priorities such as transnational crime and repression, security, and the rules-based order. These dialogues on deepening engagement in technology, digital transition, food security, and critical minerals occurred even as underlying political tensions between the two nations persist, with India repeatedly urging Canadian authorities to act against extremism and anti-India activities in Canada.

Reflecting on his time in Canada, Modi posted on his official X account: “Concluding a productive Canada visit. Thankful to the Canadian people and Government for hosting a successful G7 Summit, which witnessed fruitful discussions on diverse global issues. We remain committed to furthering global peace, prosperity and sustainability.”(With IANS inputs)
