WASHINGTON, DC – The fourth annual India Giving Day 2026 has raised $5.6 million, underscoring the growing influence of the Indian American diaspora in supporting social and environmental causes across India.

Observed on March 13, this year’s campaign brought together 51 nonprofit organizations working across sectors ranging from health and education to climate and rural development. Organizers emphasized both the scale of participation and the diversity of causes backed through the initiative, which continues to expand its national footprint.

A centerpiece of the campaign was a three-hour global livestream, India Giving Day LIVE!, which was broadcast across social media and the campaign’s official website. The interactive format gave donors and viewers a closer look at nonprofit programs while allowing real-time engagement with leaders, supporters, and public figures.

“For the diaspora, the opportunity to move as one community often comes in the form of a festival or historic commemoration,” said Kalpana Kanthan, a steering committee member and Chief Development Officer of the American India Foundation. She described the initiative as a “Festival of Giving to India,” aimed at uniting the community around a shared mission of impact.

Campaign organizers highlighted the theme #PowerOfUs to reflect what they see as the diaspora’s collective capacity to drive change. Alex Counts, Executive Director of the India Philanthropy Alliance, noted that many Indian Americans are increasingly embracing structured, high impact philanthropy.

In addition to the funds raised, the campaign featured more than 65 events nationwide, with activities continuing through the end of March in cities including New York City, Palo Alto, West Newton, and San Francisco. The largest gathering so far was hosted by Ek Kadam Aur in Germantown, drawing about 600 attendees.

A key feature of India Giving Day is its recognition of nonprofit performance and innovation. This year, top awards for securing the most donations from unique donors went to Pallium India Inc., Arogya World, and Vibha.

Awards for raising the highest total funds were presented to the American India Foundation, Sehgal Foundation, and Ashoka Trust for Research in Ecology and the Environment USA.

“India Giving Day, which began as an experiment four years ago, has now grown into a powerful movement,” said Jay Sehgal, Chair of the India Philanthropy Alliance and Executive Vice President of Sehgal Foundation, USA. He pointed to increasing youth participation as a sign of sustained momentum, adding that the initiative’s future looks “bright” as more young leaders organize fundraisers and community events.
