India Makes Bid To Host Commonwealth Games – In Ahmedabad
LONDON- India formally submitted its proposal to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games to the Evaluation Committee of Commonwealth Sport on September 23. The Indian delegation included officials from the Indian Olympic Association and both state and central governments, led by Harsh Sanghavi, Gujarat’s Sports Minister, and PT Usha, president of the Commonwealth Games Association of India.
The bid highlights Ahmedabad as the host city – in the home state of Prime Minister Narendara Modi and the powerful Home Minister Amit Shah. Officials emphasized that the proposal follows the Commonwealth’s “Games Reset” principles, focusing on affordability, inclusivity, sustainability, and the integration of para-sports. It also addresses gender equity, human rights, and long-term benefits for athletes and local communities.
Ahmedabad has experience hosting major sports events, including the ICC Cricket World Cup, the Indian Premier League, the 2022 National Games, and upcoming events such as the 2025 Asian Aquatics Championships and 2026 Asian Weightlifting Championships.
PT Usha said the bid reflects both capability and values. “Amdavad is ready to pick up the baton from Glasgow 2026 and act as a springboard to the 2034 Games,” she said, adding that the centenary edition would honor the history of Commonwealth Sport while shaping its future. (IANS)
