Indian American Who Rammed Into White House Gate Not A U.S. Citizen
India-West News Desk
WASHINGTON, DC – The 19-year-old Indian American who rammed a U-Haul truck into barriers near the White House, it has emerged, isn’t a U.S. citizen.
After being arrested on May 22, Sai Varshith Kandula, wearing orange prison clothes, made a short courtroom appearance on May 24 at which time the court was told that the accused was not a citizen or lawful permanent resident.
NBC reported that later, a Department of Justice official contradicted that and said Kandula does hold a green card. His status is of interest said legal experts as that could bring about his deportation if he is found guilty. Everyone was quick to point out that his family, which lives in Missouri, irrespective of their immigration status would not be affected.
In the court, Kandula answered routine questions confirming his name. He was found with Nazi material, mouthing hate against President Joe Biden threatenting to kill him and take over the government, when he was arrested. His lawyer, who said she had met the client just minutes earlier, did not go into any details but asked that the boy be given a pair of glasses, which had been taken when he was arrested.
Kandula was ordered held without bail until at least his next court date, on May 23 afternoon.
