OXFORD (REUTERS) – Indian journalist Mitali Mukherjee has been named Director of the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism at the University of Oxford. Her appointment follows an open, independent selection process, after serving as Acting Director since October 2024.
Mukherjee has led the Institute’s Journalist Programmes since 2022, representing it globally and driving initiatives such as expanding support for its flagship Fellowship Programme and securing funding for the Oxford Climate Journalism Network.
A political economy journalist with over two decades of experience across television, print, and digital media, Mukherjee has held key editorial roles including Consulting Business Editor at The Wire and Mint, and Markets Editor at CNBC TV18. She also anchored for TV Today and Doordarshan, and led gender initiatives as a Fellow at the Observer Research Foundation.
A Chevening fellow, TEDx speaker, and co-founder of two civil society and financial literacy start-ups, Mukherjee is a gold medallist from both the Indian Institute of Mass Communication and Delhi University.
Chair of the Institute’s Steering Committee Alan Rusbridger praised her “clear and compelling vision,” while Professor David Doyle, Head of Oxford’s Department of Politics and International Relations, said he looked forward to building on the Institute’s global impact with her leadership.
Mukherjee said she was honoured to lead the Institute at a time of rapid transformation in global journalism. “Our mission is to explore the future of journalism through research, engagement and collaboration. We remain international in our reach and purpose.”
