NEW YORK, NY -Justice Rajesh Bindal of the Supreme Court of India joined global academic and policy leaders at Pace University for the ‘Intelligent Futures: The Role of Artificial Intelligence in Shaping Universities and Higher Education’ conference, examining AI’s expanding role in universities.

Organized by the World University Leaders Forumin partnership with O.P. Jindal Global University, the one-day event brought together administrators, faculty, and policymakers to discuss AI’s impact on teaching, research, governance, and student engagement. The conference also marked the release of the AI Governance Report 2026, outlining approaches to responsible AI adoption.

Delivering the keynote, Justice Bindal stressed the importance of regulation and oversight. “Artificial intelligence has come to stay, and we cannot ignore it,” he said. “The challenge before universities is to ensure it is used responsibly, with clear policies and thoughtful governance.”

Pace University President Marvin Krislov emphasized global collaboration. “Convenings like Intelligent Futures show the importance of bringing together diverse global perspectives to tackle complex challenges,” he said, adding that the university is focused on advancing AI literacy and responsible innovation.

Panel discussions addressed AI’s implications across disciplines and institutional systems. In a session on governance, Ericka Watson, principal and CEO of Data Strategy Advisors, underscored the need for transparency. “You can’t manage what you can’t see,” Watson said. “Institutions need clear visibility into what AI tools are being used, how they are being used, and by whom.”

Representing the Indian academic perspective, C. Raj Kumar, Vice Chancellor of O.P. Jindal Global University, highlighted AI’s transformative impact. “AI is fundamentally reshaping how knowledge is created, shared, and governed,” he said.

The conference also addressed academic integrity, data governance, accessibility, and workforce readiness. Among those in attendance was Binaya Srikanta Pradhan, Consul General of India in New York.
