WASHINGTON, DC – On the fourth anniversary of the January 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol, Attorney General Merrick B. Garland issued a statement reflecting on the violent assault that disrupted the certification of the presidential election results.
“On this day, four years ago, police officers were brutally assaulted while bravely defending the United States Capitol,” Garland said. He highlighted the physical toll on officers who were punched, tackled, tased, and attacked with chemical agents. He also paid tribute to the five officers who lost their lives due to the events of that day.
Garland described January 6 as a violent attack on law enforcement and the peaceful transfer of power, a cornerstone of American democracy. He acknowledged the ongoing impact on the officers who survived and the families of those who died.
Over the past four years, the Justice Department has conducted one of its largest and most resource-intensive investigations. Garland noted that prosecutors, FBI agents, and investigators have processed vast amounts of physical and digital evidence, identifying and arresting hundreds of individuals involved in the attack. To date, over 1,500 people have been charged for crimes related to January 6 and the events leading up to it.
“The public servants of the Justice Department have sought to hold accountable those criminally responsible for the January 6 attack on our democracy with unrelenting integrity,” Garland said, expressing pride and gratitude for the department’s work.
