NEW YORK, NY – Kash Patel likely didn’t expect his book to receive a publicity push from the mayor of New York City — but that’s exactly what happened. Days after federal bribery charges against him were dropped, Mayor Eric Adams used the occasion not just to declare victory but to promote “Government Gangsters: The Deep State, the Truth and the Battle for Our Democracy”, a book by Patel, the FBI head and Trump loyalist.

Written in 2023, it was mostly panned by reviewers for its take on the imaginary Deep State and how in his estimation democracy could be restored.

As reported by The New York Times, Adams wrapped up his celebratory news conference by imploring New Yorkers to read Patel’s book — a call he repeated at least three more times within 24 hours. He gave the book a shout-out during a high-profile appearance on the Flagrant podcast, in a Fox 5 interview, and again at a Police Department press briefing.

The endorsements had a swift impact. According to sales data cited by NYT, U.S. print sales of the book surged nearly 800 percent in the week of Adams’s informal promotional blitz, jumping from 228 to 2,019 copies.

It was the highest single-week total since October 2023, when the book was first released. The spike also helped the debunked book crack Amazon’s “most sold” nonfiction list for the first time, debuting at No. 11, and earning it a spot — No. 14 — on The New York Times nonfiction best-seller list.

Patel’s book peddles a narrative of government overreach, suggesting a “deep state” conspiracy within U.S. institutions that targets political outsiders — a view that Adams appears to have embraced.

On the Flagrant podcast, he revisited the idea of a “permanent government” working behind the scenes — rhetoric that mirrors Patel’s central thesis. On Fox 5, he singled out “Kash’s book” as one that had made a particular impression on him in recent months.

Patel, for his part, has continued to push claims about federal overreach, the so-called “Russia hoax,” and even alleged FBI complicity in the Jan. 6 Capitol riot.
