NEW DELHI – In the wake of the India-Pakistan tensions, the U.S. Embassy in India had issued a May 7 advisory warning Americans to avoid travel to Jammu and Kashmir, citing potential security risks and flight disruptions. U.S. citizens were advised to enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) and monitor updates via social media and official channels.
Separately, the US has advised its citizens in Lahore to either leave the city if safe or shelter-in-place.
The U.S. Consulate General in Lahore issued the alert late on May 7, citing ‘reports of drone explosions, downed drones, and possible airspace incursions in and around Lahore.’ All consulate personnel were directed to remain sheltered-in-place. The advisory urged U.S. citizens to prepare contingency evacuation plans that do not rely on U.S. government assistance, ensure travel documents are accessible, remain informed through local media, carry valid identification, and comply with local authorities. Preliminary reports also suggested possible evacuations near Lahore’s main airport.
“U.S. citizens who find themselves in an area of active conflict should leave if they can do so safely. If it is not safe to leave, they should shelter-in-place,” the statement emphasized.
