HONOLULU, HI – Kilauea, one of the world’s most active volcano in Hawaii, erupted for the seventh time since December 2024. The eruption began on January 27 at 6:42 p.m. local time, feeding a small lava flow onto the crater floor. Lava fountains reached heights of 100-120 feet, and the eruption is expected to last between 10-20 hours.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the lava flow has covered 15-20% of the volcano crater floor. An additional flow emerged from the south side of the cone shortly after 7:30 p.m.

The eruption, which is contained within the Hawaii Volcano National Park, has led to concerns over volcanic gas emissions, including sulfur dioxide, which could create volcanic smog, or “vog,” in the atmosphere. The National Park Service has advised the public to avoid the area due to the hazards posed by high volcanic gas levels and volcanic glass strands.

The eruption is currently under an orange warning, indicating heightened unrest with an uncertain timeframe for further eruptions. The USGS has provided a live stream to monitor the ongoing activity.
