Kondareddypally Becomes South India’s First Fully Solar-Powered Village

HYDERABAD – In Telangana’s Nagarkurnool district, a once-ordinary village has quietly scripted history. Kondareddypally, the native village of Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy, has become South India’s first—and India’s second—100 percent solar-powered village, a milestone that blends clean energy with rural resilience.

At the heart of the achievement is Telangana’s green energy mission, which has turned the 514-house settlement in Vangoor Mandal into a self-sufficient hub of solar power. Already, 480 households run on 3 KW rooftop panels, while schools and 11 government offices rely on larger 60 KW systems. Even the village’s 34 mud-walled homes are slated to join once permanent structures are built under the ‘Indiramma’ housing scheme.

The shift to solar has transformed everyday life. Each household now generates about 360 units of electricity a month, eliminating power cuts and monthly bills. Villagers say the impact goes beyond comfort—it has turned them into green entrepreneurs. Surplus energy is sold to the grid at Rs 5.25 per unit, and in September alone, Kondareddypally supplied one lakh units, earning nearly Rs 5 lakh in revenue.

“This isn’t just about free power. It’s about income, dignity, and showing that rural India can lead the way in renewable energy,” one villager said.

The Rs 10.53 crore project rests on a unique financial model—Rs 3.56 crore from a central subsidy, Rs 4.09 crore in CSR funding from Premier Energies, and Rs 2.59 crore for infrastructure development. Officials call it proof of what can be achieved when government vision, corporate support, and community participation come together.

For Kondareddypally, the transformation has been as symbolic as it is practical. From a small village in Telangana, it now stands as a model solar village for India, reducing carbon footprint while strengthening rural economies.

“Clean energy and rural empowerment don’t have to be separate stories,” said one official. “Here, they have merged into a single success.”

With its rooftops glinting in the sun and its residents proudly producing more energy than they consume, Kondareddypally has become more than a village—it is a statement on the future of sustainable living in India.
