Labonee Mohanta’s Production Fuses Kathak, Jazz, Classical Music

FREMONT, CA – MILANA, an experimental performance blending Kathak dance, Indian classical music, and jazz, premieres on March 15, 2025, at Jackson Theater, Ohlone College.

The production features Kathak artist Labonee Mohanta, percussionist Rohan Krishnamurthy, jazz pianist Colin Hogan, and sitarist Abhisek Mallick. Unlike traditional dance performances, MILANA integrates the dancer as part of the musical ensemble, emphasizing live improvisation instead of fixed choreography.

“This project redefines how dance and music interact,” Mohanta said. “We explore how they can function as one.”

By merging North and South Indian traditions with jazz, MILANA challenges artistic boundaries and offers audiences a new perspective on collaboration.
