NEW YORK, NY – Democratic mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani has reached the fundraising cap for New York City’s June primary, raising over $8 million from approximately 18,000 donors, with projected matching funds. His campaign is the first in the mayoral race to hit the cap, Gothamist reported.

Mamdani, a state assemblymember from Queens, announced that his campaign would now focus on volunteer recruitment instead of fundraising. “It means that instead, I’m now asking New Yorkers for their time,” he told Gothamist. The campaign is now focused on expanding its base of 7,000 volunteers, aiming to knock on over 1 million doors before the race ends.

Mamdani’s decision to stop fundraising is risky as the official matching fund payout isn’t confirmed until two weeks before the primary, the report noted. Candidates can spend up to $8 million with over $7 million in matching funds.

Mamdani’s campaign has raised more than $1.4 million, including over $900,000 in matching claims, surpassing the public funds threshold. He has also garnered more donors than any other candidate.

Meanwhile, Mayor Eric Adams is still awaiting public matching funds due to ongoing federal corruption charges, despite raising $4.4 million without matching funds.

Recent polling data from Honan Strategy Group shows Mamdani in second place, polling at 18%, behind former Governor Andrew Cuomo at 41%.

The primary voter registration deadline is June 14.
