New Delhi Calls Trump’s Tariffs ‘Unjustified’, Vows To Protect National Interests
WASHINGTON , D.C./NEW DELHI-A deepening rift has emerged between the United States and India following President Donald Trump’s decision to impose an additional 25 per cent tariff on Indian imports. The move, announced through a new executive order, is a direct response to India’s continued purchase of Russian oil, which the U.S. alleges is “fueling the Russian war machine.” The new tariffs, which are in addition to a previously announced 25 per cent rate, are set to take effect 21 days after the order was signed.
India has reacted strongly to the decision. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson released a statement on August 6, labeling the U.S. actions as “unfair, unjustified, and unreasonable.” The MEA reiterated that India’s oil imports are based on market factors and are essential to ensuring the energy security of its 1.4 billion citizens. The statement added that India would take all necessary measures to protect its national interests.
During a press briefing on August 5, U.S. State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce declined to directly comment on India’s official response. “I will not characterize or remark on another nation’s comments about what they will or will not do,” she stated. However, she defended the administration’s stance, noting that Trump “is the guiding hand, and when it comes to what Russia is doing and those nations that are facilitating this war on Ukraine, it will be up to President Trump about how to respond.”
The Indian government has also highlighted what it sees as double standards in the U.S. approach. The MEA pointed out that several other countries are also engaged in trade with Russia, including the European Union, which has a trade volume of $67.5 billion. Former U.S. Permanent Representative to the UN, Nikki Haley, echoed this sentiment on X, warning that singling out India while China, the “number one buyer of Russian and Iranian oil,” received a tariff pause could “burn a relationship with a strong ally like India.” (IANS)
