NEW YORK, NY – New York City has officially declared April 14 as Dr. Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar Day in honor of the 134th birth anniversary of the principal architect of India’s Constitution and a global icon for social justice and equality.
Mayor Eric Adams made the announcement recognizing Ambedkar’s enduring contributions as a pioneering economist, political thinker, and tireless advocate for human rights. “Generations of people from around the world have crossed oceans seeking new possibilities in New York City,” Adams said in the proclamation. “Their contributions have shaped a vibrant history and enriched our city’s diverse cultural fabric.”
Mayor Adams praised Ambedkar for his unwavering efforts to dismantle caste discrimination and uplift marginalized communities. “Ambedkar challenged social hierarchies and worked to secure rights for farmers and tenants in India,” he said. “Having faced harsh caste discrimination himself, he dedicated his life to building a society rooted in equity, justice, and inclusion.”
Adams also reflected on the relevance of Ambedkar’s iconic call to action: “Educate, agitate, organize.” He affirmed that New York City shares a deep commitment to these ideals, making the proclamation not just a tribute, but a call to uphold Ambedkar’s vision in today’s world.
