AKRON, OH – Life Gurukula has acquired a former Catholic convent in Akron for $2.21 million as it prepares to establish a Hindu temple and retreat center on the 16-acre property.

The Hindu spiritual organization purchased the property at 1230 W. Market Street from the Dominican Sisters of Peace, headquartered in Columbus, in a transaction announced August 14.

The property has about 60,000 square feet of space, more than 100 rooms and capacity for more than 200 participants. Life Gurukula plans to install deities of Rama, Hanuman, Krishna and Devi at the site.

Vivek Gupta, co-founder of Life Gurukula, and affiliated to Chinmaya Mission described the project as a retreat center focused on lifelong self-development.

The property was established in 1923 as the motherhouse of Our Lady of the Elms. It was founded in the former mansion of Arthur H. Marks, a B.F. Goodrich executive.

Life Gurukula will hold a Murti Sthapana, or deity installation ceremony, at the property on November 14.
