AUSTIN, TX – Pooja Sethi has secured the Democratic nomination for Texas House District 47 after a decisive victory in the primary, defeating 20 year U.S. Army veteran Joseph Kopser and positioning herself for a November showdown with Republican nominee Jennifer Mushtaler.

Sethi won the race with 76 percent of the vote to Kopser’s 24 percent in a contest that drew national attention after she publicly pushed back against what she described as attacks on her Indian heritage during the campaign.

Following the win, Sethi thanked supporters and volunteers who helped power her campaign across the Austin area district.

“I am so incredibly honored to have earned the Democratic nomination for Texas House District 47,” she said in a post on Instagram. “I’m deeply grateful to my family, amazing team, volunteers, and supporters who stepped up, knocked doors, made calls, and believed in what we’re building together. Thank you!”

She said conversations with voters during the campaign shaped her priorities and reinforced the issues she plans to focus on if elected.

“At doors across the district, families told me their medication costs too much, parents shared fears about their child’s school closing, and women spoke about their concerns for their fundamental rights,” Sethi wrote. “I hear you, and I promise I will fight for you.”

Calling the campaign a collective effort, she urged supporters to continue organizing ahead of the general election.

“This has never been about one person, it’s about all of us,” she said. “Let’s keep this momentum going and continue fighting for a Texas where every person can thrive, all the way to November.”

Sethi also highlighted the broader Democratic ticket in Texas, congratulating fellow candidates and encouraging voters to stay engaged.

“Now let’s go! Congrats to @ginafortexas for Governor and @jamestalarico for U.S. Senate!” she wrote. “Join me in doing everything we can to get them and all our Democrats elected in November! We had more than 27,000 voters show up to the polls in HD 47. I cannot wait to engage them and build on the incredible movement that voters in HD 47 and across Texas have shown is possible.”

Sethi served as chief of staff to Texas State Representative Vikki Goodwin and is chair of the Travis County Democratic Party. With nearly four years of experience working in the Texas Legislature, she has been involved in legislative strategy, policy development and constituent advocacy.

Before joining the Capitol, she worked as an immigration attorney with Catholic Charities, representing families navigating the immigration system and advocating for due process and dignity.

During her time in the Legislature, Sethi has helped advance legislation focused on preventing child drownings, protecting survivors of domestic violence and expanding access to affordable housing. Her campaign priorities include strengthening democratic institutions, fully funding public education and pursuing gun reform measures.

Sethi lives in House District 47 with her husband and son. She earned her Juris Doctor from the Syracuse University College of Law after completing a Bachelor of Arts degree at George Washington University.
