Pramila Jayapal Condemns Laken Riley Act As “Highway To Mass Deportation”

WASHINGTON, DC – Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D-WA) took to Twitter to strongly oppose the Laken Riley Act and then later went on television calling it a “highway to mass deportation.”
Her remarks came after the bill, which targets crimes committed by migrants, gained significant attention for its potential to detain individuals without due process.
Pramila Jayapal posted, “This is a bad bill. It removes due process and subjects any undocumented person who is arrested or charged with shoplifting or theft to mandatory detention — no trial or conviction needed. It’s all fear mongering about immigrants, not making people safer.”
During an interview on MSNBC’s The Sunday Show with Jonathan Capehart, she expanded on her concerns. “It is essentially a highway to mass deportation,” she explained. “You can have any number of people picked up and put into the criminal justice system simply for being accused, with no conviction, no admission of guilt.”
Pramila Jayapal also noted how the bill would impact those who are merely accused of a crime, stating, “Right now, if you are picked up on shoplifting or theft, and you are actually convicted of that, you are mandatorily detained. If you are picked up and you admit to the crime, you are mandatorily detained. This says you can just be accused.”
If enacted, the Laken Riley Act would mandate the detention of undocumented immigrants accused of crimes like theft and burglary, even without a conviction. The Senate advanced the bill last week with an 84-9 procedural vote, including support from Democrats. The House had already passed the bill.

If she opposes, it must be a good law! Congress can blindly pass it!
