WASHINGTON, D.C.-Vice President JD Vance has revealed that the profound loss of his friend and political commentator Charlie Kirk served as a pivo tal moment for his wife, Usha Vance, regarding her decision to expand their family. In an excerpt from his upcoming book, ‘Communion: Finding My Way Back to Faith’, set to be released on June 16, Vance writes that the couple’s journey toward welcoming their fourth child was deeply influenced by the tragedy that took Kirk’s life in September 2025.
Charlie Kirk, the 31-year-old co-founder of the organization Turning Point USA, was shot and killed at Utah Valley University on September 10, 2025. He was a father of two and husband to Erika Frantzve.
In his memoir, JD Vance reflects on the emotional toll of that period, recounting how his wife, Usha, spent time comforting Erika Kirk in the immediate aftermath of the shooting. During those moments of profound sorrow, Erika shared with Usha her regret over having only two children with her late husband.
For Vance, this conversation marked a significant shift in his household. “For years, I’d asked Usha to have another baby, and for years, she told me she was done, especially now that public service had elevated us into the national spotlight,” JD Vance wrote. “But something changed for Usha, and not long after we buried my friend, she became pregnant with our fourth child, a boy.”
The Vances are already parents to three children: Ewan, 9, Vivek, 6, and Mirabel, 4. The family announced in January that they are expecting their fourth child, a boy, due in late July. Usha Vance is currently on track to become the second wife of a vice president to welcome a child during her time in that role.
Beyond the impact on their family planning, Vance shared that he frequently relied on Kirk for guidance during the high-pressure 2024 election campaign. When Vance expressed feelings of guilt about the toll his political career was taking on his children, Kirk offered a grounding perspective: “Don’t try to convince your son it’s not a sacrifice. It is. Just try to take some solace in the fact that it’s a worthy sacrifice. I’ll say a prayer for you.”
Recalling the day of the shooting, the Vice President described the shock of learning the news via group chat. “Of course, I hoped above all that he would survive for his wife and kids,” he wrote. “We prayed that God would save him. But God saw it differently.”
Reflecting on his faith, Vance added, “I don’t know why God does things like this, but I am grateful to him that there will soon be another source of joy in our lives, another beautiful soul to wonder at and fall in love with, God’s beautiful creation.”
