Progressive Challenger Ends Shri Thanedar’s House Tenure

DETROIT, MI – Rep. Shri Thanedar (D-MI) conceded defeat in Michigan’s 13th Congressional District Democratic primary, ending his bid for a third term after losing to state Rep. Donavan McKinney in one of the most closely watched Democratic contests of the 2026 election cycle.

“This morning, I called Rep. Donavan McKinney and congratulated him on his win,” Thanedar wrote on X on August. 5. “I offered him full cooperation and a smooth transition.”

McKinney’s victory marks another successful challenge by a progressive candidate against an incumbent Democrat, underscoring the growing influence of the party’s left wing in this year’s primaries. Shri Thanedar’s Journey to Congress

Thanedar entered the race with the advantages of incumbency, self-funding capacity and endorsements from top House Democratic leaders, including Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries. But McKinney consolidated progressive support in a one-on-one contest, earning backing from Senator Bernie Sanders, Justice Democrats, the Working Families Party and other organizations.

The Detroit-area district is heavily Democratic, making McKinney the overwhelming favorite to win the general election in November.

Thanedar’s defeat comes amid a broader pattern of progressive gains in Democratic primaries. In Michigan, former public health official Abdul El-Sayed also defeated Rep. Haley Stevens for the Democratic nomination for the U.S. Senate, while other progressive candidates scored victories in House and state legislative races.

The results have highlighted an increasingly competitive struggle between the Democratic establishment and its progressive wing.

In Thanedar’s case it was also a coming together of the African American vote which this time centered around McKinney instead of being splintered across various candidates.
