WASHINGTON, DC – The U.S. Department of Justice’s Community Relations Service (CRS) has launched a new initiative called the “Engaging and Building Relationships with Hindu American Communities Program.” The program is designed to enhance engagement between law enforcement, schools, and public organizations and Hindu American communities, addressing concerns related to underrepresentation and prejudice that many in the community have expressed.

Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi (D-IL), one of the few Hindu Americans serving in Congress, welcomed the initiative on January 22. He highlighted the significance of the program, which responds to the concerns of Hindu Americans who have frequently faced prejudice and discrimination. Krishnamoorthi pointed to numerous requests from both himself and Hindu American leaders for measures to address hate crimes and foster stronger relationships with law enforcement.

“I commend the Hindu American Foundation for its vital role in shaping this program,” Krishnamoorthi said singling the organization out. He cautioned that while the launch of the program is a positive step, it is crucial to ensure its continued success, particularly as the Department of Justice undergoes transitions between administrations.

The CRS program consists of a five-part, four-hour training designed to educate law enforcement and public organizations about Hindu philosophy, the impact of misinformation, and strategies for building trust and effective communication within communities. Developed with input from Hindu American organizations, the training is offered at no cost to participating communities, making it accessible to a wide range of organizations and individuals across the country.
