QUEENS, NY — A lawsuit filed in Queens Supreme Court claims that a fatal 2023 plane crash on Long Island, which left Reeva Gupta severely injured, was preventable and the result of negligence by a local flight school. The crash killed Reeva’s mother, Roma Gupta, 63, and the pilot, Fayzul Chowdhury, 23. Reeva, 33, survived but sustained extensive burns, requiring months of treatment, surgeries, and the amputation of four fingers.

The suit targets 2 BA Pilot NYC and its parent company, Danny Waizman Aviation, alleging that the flight school ignored prior safety concerns about the aircraft. According to a federal investigation, an electrical short in the plane’s oil pressure indicating line led to an oil leak, which ignited mid-flight. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) report revealed that the same aircraft had previously experienced smoke in the cockpit on two separate occasions, weeks before the crash.

Reeva Gupta, in an interview with New York Post, described the tragic moments during the flight. As the plane approached landing, she recalled smoke emerging from beneath a seat, followed by flames. “I was trying to grab a fire extinguisher when I heard my mother say, ‘Reeva—get out of the plane,'” Gupta said. “That was the last thing she said before everything went dark.”

The lawsuit claims that Danny Waizman, the flight school owner, failed to take action on these safety concerns. When the Post reached out to Waizman, he reportedly ended the call without comment.

Attorneys for Gupta argue that the crash was a direct result of “gross negligence” and that the flight school’s failure to maintain the aircraft properly led to the tragedy. Gupta’s legal team emphasized the need for accountability and said, “This lawsuit is about exposing failures in aviation safety and preventing future tragedies.”

The severely injured Reeva Gupta told the Post she is determined to ensure that such negligence is not overlooked and that no other family faces the same heartbreaking consequences.
