WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman Suhas Subramanyam (D-VA) has introduced new legislation aimed at ensuring transparency and accountability within the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). In his first term, he has raised concerns about what he describes as “illegal” and “unconstitutional” actions by the department, which he claims have resulted in the unjust termination of “highly qualified” federal workers and the dismantling of “congressionally-authorized agencies.”
The proposed legislation, known as the Legislative Enforcement Against Setbacks from Harmful DOGE Actions Act, (LEASH DOGE Act), is designed to “force” DOGE to make its actions public and requires regular reporting to Congress. Subramanyam emphasized the need for transparency, stating that the bill will track the “damage” caused by DOGE to essential government services and the potential risks posed to national safety and prosperity as its members wield unchecked power.
Key provisions of LEASH DOGE mandate that the department submit a public report detailing its employees and advisors, along with their background check statuses, security clearances, and any conflicts of interest. Furthermore, DOGE would be required to testify before Congress regarding the types of sensitive information accessible to its employees. The legislation also calls for the creation of a public website that would be updated weekly, providing information on employee roles, federal layoffs, funding cuts, and points of contact.
Subramanyam criticized DOGE’s recent actions, asserting that the department has overstepped its bounds. “DOGE has usurped congressional authority and the will of the American people to make unauthorized, unconstitutional spending decisions and illegally gain access to extremely sensitive data of American taxpayers without any oversight or accountability,” he stated. “These bills are common sense measures to finally make DOGE accountable to the American people and stop its leaders from illegally taking away congressionally authorized programs and services.”
