DETROIT, MI – Congressman Shri Thanedar has strongly criticized President-elect Donald Trump’s plan to abolish birthright citizenship, calling it a direct attack on a cornerstone of American democracy. Thanedar, a firm advocate of the 14th Amendment, voiced his opposition on social media, pledging to fight against any effort to undermine this constitutional right.

“Birthright citizenship is a right every American enjoys. Donald Trump’s threats to this fundamental concept, enshrined in the 14th Amendment, are antithetical to the rule of law. I will fight tooth and nail to prevent him from deporting American citizens,” the Democrat posted on social media.

The 14th Amendment, in effect for over 150 years, grants citizenship to anyone born on U.S. soil. Trump has repeatedly criticized this provision, calling it a “ridiculous” concept that encourages illegal immigration. During his first term, he floated the idea of eliminating birthright citizenship through an executive order, a proposal that took a backseat during the pandemic but has resurfaced as a key promise for his second term.

Thanedar emphasized the constitutional protection birthright citizenship provides, stating, “If a person is born in America, then they are an American citizen. Efforts to ban or circumvent birthright citizenship are wrong and unconstitutional. As a congressman, I’ll fight back against any attempt to roll it back.”

The Migration Policy Institute notes that children born to Indian nationals on H-1B visas or green cards could face uncertainty about their citizenship status if Trump’s plan were implemented.
