WASHINGTON, DC – Anxiety is mounting in Washington as speculation swirls over a potential shake-up in U.S. military leadership under the Trump administration. In a rare joint statement, the top Republican lawmakers overseeing the Pentagon—Senator Roger Wicker and Representative Mike Rogers—expressed deep concern over reported discussions to overhaul key military commands, including potentially relinquishing the U.S. role as NATO’s Supreme Allied Commander Europe (SACEUR).
The SACEUR position, held exclusively by a four-star U.S. general since 1950, is responsible for overseeing NATO operations in Europe. While sources indicate the proposal has been discussed, they also caution that it may not be viable and no formal decision has been announced.
“We will not accept significant changes to our warfighting structure that are made without a rigorous interagency process, coordination with combatant commanders and the Joint Staff, and collaboration with Congress,” Wicker and Rogers warned. “Such moves risk undermining American deterrence around the globe and detracting from our negotiating positions with America’s adversaries.”
NBC News first reported that the Trump administration is considering giving up the SACEUR role as part of a broader effort to consolidate military commands and cut costs. The proposal, if pursued, could further rattle NATO allies, many of whom are already wary of Washington’s shifting stance on European security under Trump.
The administration’s approach to NATO has fueled tensions, with Trump’s outreach to Russia and warnings that the U.S. can no longer shoulder the burden of European defense leaving allies increasingly uneasy.
