CUTTACK, (ANI)– Captain Rohit Sharma rediscovered his form in spectacular fashion, breaking multiple records during India’s emphatic four-wicket triumph in the second ODI against England in Cuttack on February 9.
Rohit silenced his critics with a blistering 119 off 90 balls, leading India to an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series. While chasing a 305-run target, he set the stage for India’s victory with a commanding performance.
After a cautious start, Rohit unleashed his attacking game in the powerplay, racing to a half-century in just 30 deliveries. He continued his dominance against spinners Adil Rashid and Liam Livingstone, even as the ball began turning significantly.
On his 76th delivery, Rohit stepped down the track and launched the ball into the stands to bring up his 32nd ODI century, the third-most by an Indian batter. It was also his 49th international hundred, behind only Sachin Tendulkar (100) and Virat Kohli (81) among Indians.
Rohit reached his century in 76 balls, making it his second-fastest ODI hundred. His quickest remains a 63-ball ton against Afghanistan in 2023.
The victory in Cuttack marked Rohit’s 36th ODI win as captain, tying him with legendary Viv Richards for the third-most wins in the format. Clive Lloyd, Ricky Ponting, and Virat Kohli share the top spot with 39 wins each.
Rohit also moved closer to surpassing Shahid Afridi for the most sixes in men’s ODIs. With seven sixes in his innings, he overtook Chris Gayle’s tally of 331 and now sits second with 338 sixes, trailing Afridi’s record of 351.
