MUMBAI, (ANI) – Veteran filmmaker and Dadasaheb Phalke Award recipient Shyam Benegal passed away at the age of 90 on December 23 at Wockhardt Hospital in Mumbai. He had been undergoing treatment for chronic kidney disease.

Benegal, often regarded as a pioneer of Indian parallel cinema, left an indelible mark on the industry with films such as Ankur, Nishant, Manthan, and Bhumika. His works addressed socio-political themes with remarkable depth, earning him widespread acclaim and seven National Film Awards for Best Feature Film in Hindi.

Renowned filmmaker Shekhar Kapur paid tribute to Benegal, calling him “the man who changed the direction of Indian cinema.” Kapur wrote, “He created the ‘new wave’ cinema… Farewell, my friend and guide.”

Actress Shabana Azmi, a frequent collaborator, shared a nostalgic photo from Benegal’s 90th birthday celebration, where she and other actors posed with the director. She fondly referred to herself and others as “Shyam Benegal actors.”

Born on December 14, 1934, in Hyderabad, Benegal hailed from a Konkani-speaking Chitrapur Saraswat Brahmin family. His films, including Junoon and Suraj Ka Satvan Ghoda, explored complex themes such as forbidden love, feminism, and societal struggles, often featuring a stellar ensemble cast of FTII and NSD alumni like Naseeruddin Shah, Om Puri, Smita Patil, and Shabana Azmi.

In addition to feature films, Benegal made significant contributions to Indian television with iconic series like Bharat Ek Khoj and Samvidhaan. His international recognition included showcasing Manthan at the Cannes Film Festival and helming Mujib: The Making of a Nation (2023), an India-Bangladesh co-production on Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

Benegal also served as Director of the National Film Development Corporation (NFDC) and was a jury member at prestigious events such as the Moscow International Film Festival. His lifetime achievements were honored with the Padma Shri, Padma Bhushan, and the Dadasaheb Phalke Award.

Shyam Benegal’s legacy as a visionary filmmaker will continue to inspire generations of artists and audiences.
