LOS ANGELES, CA – Sikhlens Publications is set to release two beautifully illustrated children’s books this Vaisakhi: Proud to be a Kaur and Proud to be a Singh. Authored by Sandip Kaur Sodhi, a teacher-librarian and cultural advocate, and illustrated by artist Pardeep Singh, these books are designed to foster pride, understanding, and cultural identity among young readers.
The books are designed in particular, for Punjabi schools, libraries, and families interested in a multicultural education, the organization said. They aim to nurture identity and instill values of strength, dignity, courage, valor, and compassion—principles that define the Sikh heritage.
“These books are love letters to our children and to our heritage,” says author Sandip Kaur Sodhi. “They’re designed to spark pride, curiosity, and conversation about the core values that define who we are as Sikhs.”
Proud to be a Kaur follows a spirited young girl who discovers that “Kaur” means “sovereign,” symbolizing strength and courage passed down through generations of Sikh women.
Similarly, Proud to be a Singh tells the story of a young boy learning that “Singh,” meaning “lion,” represents valor, compassion, and purpose—principles central to Sikh identity.
Sikhlens will officially release the books at the annual Vaisakhi Celebration at the Los Angeles Convention Center on April 20.
