Student Praveen Kumar Gampa Shot Dead In Milwaukee

MILWAUKEE, WI – Indian student Praveen Kumar Gampa, who was pursuing postgraduate studies at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, was tragically shot and killed in a suspected robbery here. The Indian Consulate in Chicago confirmed the incident and stated it is in contact with Praveen’s family and the university, offering support in any way possible.

Praveen, a native of Shadnagar Rangareddy district in Telangana, had traveled to the U.S. in August 2023 to pursue his master’s degree. His father, Raghavulu, shared that Praveen had visited India in December before returning to the U.S. in January. On February 21, he had cleared his college dues, paying 11 lakh rupees. The family last spoke to him the night before his death, but early the next morning, they received a call from the police, who confirmed his identity through his friends.

Praveen’s grieving mother has urged the Indian government to expedite the process of bringing his body back to India. “I talked to my son the day before he was killed. He told me everything was fine and that he was going to his room. That was the last time I spoke to him,” she said. His father also made an emotional appeal to other parents, urging them not to send their children abroad for studies, citing safety concerns.
