Suhail Kwatra, High Profile Saks Stylist, Accused Of Luxury Retail Fraud
India-West News Desk
BOSTON, MA – Suhail Kwatra, a former Saks Fifth Avenue stylist, is accused of orchestrating an internal fraud scheme that allegedly cost the luxury retailer nearly $430,000 dollars, according to court documents filed in Massachusetts.
Prosecutors allege that Kwatra, 43, exploited his access to the company’s sales and returns system by processing refunds for high end merchandise that was never collected by customers. Authorities say those refunds were converted into Saks gift cards, which Kwatra allegedly used to purchase items for himself.
The court filings further accuse Kwatra of misusing promotional cards, giving away unpaid merchandise and improperly using a company issued credit card. Saks claims the total loss from the alleged activity amounted to $429,400.
Known publicly as the “Fashion Whisperer of Boston,” he worked closely with wealthy shoppers and Boston socialites, including the wife of former Boston Red Sox star David Ortiz.
Kwatra, a graduate of New York’s Fashion Institute of Technology, used his position as a trusted personal stylist to manage expensive custom orders and returns, prosecutors say, giving him unusual latitude within the store’s operations.
Kwatra has denied any wrongdoing. In a statement to The Wall Street Journal, he said he has always adhered to company policies and focused on providing the best possible service to his clients.
