NAPERVILLE – Supna Jain, a second-generation Indian American and veteran educator, has been sworn in as the first woman of color to serve on the Naperville City Council.
Jain, a principal lecturer in communications and media studies and faculty director of the Center for the Advancement of Faculty Excellence at North Central College, has also served on the Indian Prairie School District 204 board of education since 2021.
Her background in public service and education, she said, has shaped her approach to leadership.
Her appointment became official on September 16, when the eight seated council members voted unanimously to fill the vacancy left by former councilwoman Allison Longenbaugh, who resigned last month. Jain will serve the remainder of Longenbaugh’s term, which runs until April 2027.
Council members offered a warm welcome, using the public forum portion of the meeting to commend Jain’s experience and commitment to the community. A number of her colleagues and students were also present to witness her swearing-in.
While she emphasized that breaking barriers was not the motivation behind her decision to seek the seat, Jain acknowledged the milestone, saying, “representation matters.”
Jain also credited her family for their encouragement in her decision to step into city leadership. She lives in Naperville with her husband and their two children.
