WASHINGTON, DC– Elon Musk’s growing influence in the Trump administration is causing friction with some senior White House officials, who are frustrated with his approach to restructuring federal agencies, sources tell Reuters.
Trump’s Chief of Staff Susie Wiles has pushed for better coordination from Musk’s team, a source said. The tensions stem from the operations of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), an initiative led by Musk that is spearheading workforce reductions and structural overhauls in multiple federal agencies.
Despite Musk’s claims of “maximum transparency,” DOGE has disclosed little about its staffing, operations, or budget reductions. The lack of clarity has unsettled federal employees, as DOGE operatives have gained access to sensitive data across at least 15 government agencies, according to Reuters.
While some insiders downplay tensions, others suggest Musk’s unilateral actions have caused serious concerns. One issue is a series of emails sent to federal employees, including a January 28 message offering financial incentives for voluntary resignations. Some White House officials were reportedly unaware of these communications before they were sent reported Reuters.
Despite internal frustrations, Trump continues to praise Musk, calling him “fantastic” and hailing DOGE staffers as “super geniuses.” Musk, who spent over a quarter of a billion dollars supporting Trump’s 2024 campaign, maintains direct access to the president and speaks with him nearly every day.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt dismissed reports of tensions, stating, “Elon Musk is serving at the pleasure of the president, just like everyone else on this team. He takes directives directly from the president of the United States.”
