WASHINGTON DC – At the White House Diwali celebrations on October 28, U.S. President Joe Biden extended warm greetings to attendees, acknowledging the profound influence of South Asian Americans and the festival’s significance.
“The South Asian American community has enriched every part of American life,” Biden stated, underscoring their essential role in shaping America’s cultural and social landscape.
Nearly 600 guests gathered for the event, where Biden led the ceremonial lighting of the Diwali lamp, marking the festival’s spirit of light and renewal in the nation’s highest office.
In his address, Biden praised the community as “the fastest growing and most engaged community in the world,” while celebrating how Diwali has become a cherished occasion at the White House. “Now, Diwali is celebrated openly and proudly in the White House,” he affirmed. Reflecting on a pivotal time for the country, he reminded the audience of the enduring ideals that unite Americans. “Today we face an inflection point…Every once in a few generations we are reminded to not take the Idea of America for granted,” he stated, before adding, “In a country as diverse as ours, we debate, we dissent… but the key is, we never lose sight of how we got here and why.”
He also pointed to the diversity within his administration, highlighting Vice President Kamala Harris and Surgeon General Vivek Murthy. “Only in America is everything possible,” he concluded.
Adding to the event’s inspirational tone, NASA astronaut Sunita Williams delivered a heartfelt video message from the International Space Station. From 260 miles above Earth, Williams shared how her father had instilled an understanding of Diwali and other Indian festivals in her, preserving their cultural roots. “My father kept and shared his cultural roots by teaching us about Diwali and other Indian festivals,” she recalled. Williams spoke of the festival’s essence, emphasizing that “Diwali is a time of joy as goodness in the world prevails.” She expressed gratitude to the President and Vice President for recognizing the contributions of the South Asian community.
The evening’s celebrations also featured a touching moment when President Biden invited Soren and Zara, the young children of California Congressman Ro Khanna, onto the stage. Holding their hands, he symbolized the event’s inclusiveness, joyfully engaging the younger generation in this momentous occasion.
US Surgeon General Vivek Murthy, the event’s opening speaker, reflected on his own family’s journey and values, capturing the essence of the American dream that brought them to the United States.
With music, traditional dance performances, and festive lights, the White House Diwali celebration illuminated not only the values of Diwali but the spirit of unity and diversity that defines the American experience.
