WASHINGTON, DC – The United States has named India as a target in a sweeping new series of federal investigations into unfair global trade practices. This move signals escalation in trade tensions and serves as a strategic pivot for President Donald Trump following a Supreme Court ruling that recently dismantled his previous tariff framework.

The latest probes, launched under Section 301 of the Trade Act of 1974, focus on what the administration characterizes as structural excess industrial capacity, AFP reported.

Alongside India, the investigation targets several other major economies including China, Japan, and the European Union. U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer confirmed that these inquiries are specifically designed to identify countries that produce goods far beyond domestic demand, a practice Washington claims displaces American manufacturing and threatens domestic jobs.

Greer emphasized that the administration is prepared to impose new duties if the investigations confirm that trading partners are utilizing unfair subsidies or state-led industrial policies to gain an advantage. He noted that the goal is to protect the American industrial base and ensure that international trade operates on a level playing field.

In a parallel development, the administration is preparing to launch a second, even broader investigation into the use of forced labor in global supply chains. Expected to be formally initiated soon, this probe could impact as many as 60 trading partners, AFP noted. While officials have not specified whether penalties will vary by nation, the aggressive timeline suggests a desire to establish a new tariff structure by the third quarter of 2026.

These regulatory maneuvers come at a sensitive diplomatic juncture. President Trump is currently preparing for a high-stakes summit with Chinese leader Xi Jinping in Beijing scheduled for April.
