WASHINGTON, DC – The United States will need to address trade imbalances with several countries, including India and Brazil, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick said in an interview with Newsnation.

He emphasized that these nations must “react correctly” to the U.S. by opening their markets and avoiding policies that harm American interests.

“We have a bunch of countries to fix, like Switzerland, Brazil… India,” Lutnick said. “These are countries that need to really react correctly to America. Open their markets, stop taking actions that harm America, and that’s why we’re offside with them.”

Lutnick pointed to Switzerland, noting that even a small nation runs a $40 billion trade deficit with the U.S. While some might describe Switzerland as a “small rich country,” he argued that its wealth is partly because it sells $40 billion more in goods to the U.S. than it buys

The U.S. has already imposed a 50 percent tariff on imports from India and Brazil, actions Lutnick said are intended to encourage fairer trade. “These countries have to understand that if you want to sell to the U.S. consumer, right? You’ve got to play ball with the president of the United States,” he added.

He said that while work remains with several nations, “the big ones, India and Brazil… we’ll sort it out over time.”

Trade talks between India and the U.S. have already resumed.

  • Trade should be simple.

Buy what you want from my shop. And I buy what I want from your shop. The agreement should only be
    1) DO noy restrict my people from buying at your store
    2) Do not overcharge me
    3) Do not sell me anything more inferior than other customers and when the product is found harmful, help us with the recall.
