Trump Says Nobel Winner Called Him, Told Him You Deserved It
WASHINGTON, D.C. -US President Donald Trump hungering for the Nobel Peace Prize, has said that Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado, this year’s winner, accepted the award “in his honor,” citing his support for her democratic efforts in Venezuela.
Speaking to reporters at the White House on October 10, Trump said Machado called to inform him that she was dedicating the prize to him. “The person who got the Nobel Prize called me today and said, ‘I am accepting this in honor of you because you really deserved it.’ I didn’t say, ‘Give it to me,’ though. I’ve been helping her along the way. They needed a lot of help in Venezuela during the disaster. I am happy because I saved millions of lives,” Trump said.
Machado received the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize for her “brave and committed” work promoting democratic rights and leading the movement for a peaceful transition from dictatorship to democracy in Venezuela, the Norwegian Nobel Committee announced.
In its statement, the Committee described Machado as “a woman who keeps the flame of democracy burning amid a growing darkness,” emphasizing that “democracy is a precondition for lasting peace.” It noted that her struggle reflected broader global challenges to democratic values, adding that “the Venezuelan regime’s rigid hold on power and repression of its people are part of a global pattern of silenced media, imprisoned critics, and weakened rule of law.”
Trump, meanwhile, suggested he should have been recognized for his role in global peace efforts. “I said, ‘Well, what about the seven others? I should get a Nobel Prize for each one,’” he remarked,
The Nobel Committee concluded that Machado’s leadership “embodies the hope of a different future, one where the fundamental rights of citizens are protected, and their voices are heard.” It added that she meets all three criteria outlined in Alfred Nobel’s will for the selection of a peace laureate.
